So while I was slogging through the E3 posts, it seems Sega decided to sneak another Sonic game announcement out to the market. Sonic and the Black Knight is a new entry in what is apparently the "Sonic Storybook" series that began with the Arabaian Nights-themed Sonic and the Secret Rings. The press release established that this game is going to equip Sonic with a sword, ship in spring 2009, and... well, that's kind of it.
It's also the cover story for this month's Nintendo Power, which is fortunately chock-full of extra info. Looks like this time you get to control Sonic with the Nunchuk's analog stick, while Remote-waggle will be used to activate sword attacks. Also, Sonic's sword is a talking character named Calibur. RPG-like elements are abundant, with the Secret Rings skill system returning, roughly 200 items to obtain, and a "reputation" gauge to try and improve by doing knightly things for people. Knuckles and Shadow will be playable.
Can't say I'm excited about this one just on the face of it. Anyway, you can check out the text of the original press release behind the cut and marvel at the vagueness.

What will they come up with next? Giving Shadow a gun?
IIRC, the Shadow game was made purely because Sega felt it was inappropriate to depict Sonic using weapons, but fans kept requesting a game where Sonic had a gun.
I guess... you can't kill people with swords, so it's okay now?
The only sword Sonic should have is one made from his own quills!
*is being facetious*
... sigh.
