Epic Games Trash-Talks the Wii

So what does Epic Games, makers of Gears of War and the Unreal Tournament series, think of Nintendo's Wii? Skip forward to page four of this exclusive IGN interview with President Mike Capps, and you'll see that it's not a particularly glowing opinion.

Capps: It's a virus where you buy [the Wii] and you play it with your friends and they're like, "Oh my God that's so cool, I'm gonna go buy it." So you stop playing it after two months, but they buy it and they stop playing it after two months but they've showed it to someone else who then go out and buy it and so on. Everyone I know bought one and nobody turns it on. Obviously there's a class of people who really love it and enjoy it and are getting into the games but I'm still waiting for that one game that makes me play it.

But hey, Epic Games likes money, right? They'll make games for the Wii anyway... right?

Capps: No, we go forward, not back. It makes more sense for us to invest in the next-generation tech.

What this guy says is so true , about showing it to someone when you first get it, them doing that and it spreads. This is why it's selling so well,. look at all the used ones on ebay people saying they've had it for a few month or some times only a few weeks and got bored with it fast.

I have one but it's only every blue moon i touch it. Where as i never even turn my PS3 off cuz i want it ready when I wanna play which is every spare minute

be nice if there was something else decent to play, Metroid,Zelda,Brawl,Galaxy,and MarioKart Wii ,. what else is fit to play NOTHING!! ,. oh and the DragonQuest Game i like that(though it sucks in comparsion to other DQ{VIII/8 on PS2 for example} games on real consoles)

Ninteno branched off in a new direction, they didn't take a step back. If you don't have anything good to say about the competition, you should keep your mouth shut... that would demonstrate class. I just find it very unprofessional to bash other companies. BTW, everyone I know that has a Wii plays it regularly... it's not like they don't touch it for months. I play mine for hours everyday.

Obviously Wii's grahpical capability is inferior to that of 360 and PS3... but Wii's graphics are better than all consoles from last gen...so it's not a step back.

 

I had a dream last night where I was playing Gears of War, except the entire game took place at some kid's birthday party. Whenever you lined up a headshot your character would scream "HAPPY BIRTHDAY!" I don't remember much else, other than the fact that there was a lot of cursing.

Please note that I've never played Gears of War or even seen it in action, so I'm having a hard time understanding why the Wii isn't a good enough platform for a birthday party simulator.

 

i have a friend who has got a wii for christmas. a few months later, he got a 360, now he never touches his wii. as for me, i have a 360 (and cant wait for gears 2!!!!)

But, yeah, it annoys me to no end how many so-called "hardcore" gamers feel the Wii is inferior simply because it doesn't cater to their desire for cutting edge graphics and sound... Most of us are just interested in playing the games we enjoy most and appreciate games that are just plain fun - regardless if they have the latest and greatest or 8-bit. Besides, most people don't have high definition displays and surround sound speakers, so the difference between a Wii and an XBox 360 or PS3 isn't that big.

He's right! Everyone knows that "going forward" means shiny graphics, that do little to none to make a game more or less fun, and generic gameplay!

 

I don't even really see the Wii as "more fun vs. better graphics"... I just don't think pushing more polys automatically translates to a better-looking game. It's all about artistry and making do with what you have. Look at how much achingly beautiful stuff they've pried out of the last run of games on the PS2, which is even weaker than the Wii. Or some of the amazing pixel/2D art for games on the DS. Or look at Mario Galaxy -- sorry, I don't give a shit if the pipes aren't perfectly circular, that game is artistry through design.

What makes me mad about people piling onto the next gen as a "step forward" is that they seem to take it as a license to stop thinking smart about how to use what they have to create evocative images, and start thinking "wow look at all the textures we can cram onto this thing!" Like old Star Wars and new Star Wars...

 

Wow back to the graphics thing..
