See, now this is a case where untranslated text doesn't bother me. It's mildly disappointing to not know what's going on when a game features a burly fish man chatting with a red-haired schoolgirl between rounds, sure, but as long as laziness in localization doesn't interfere with gameplay, I'll allow it.
Now, if only Puyo Puyo 2 was something that we hadn't played twice before...

This is Puyo Puyo 2. Or is it Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine? Or Kirby's Avalanche? The gameplay mechanics work the exact same way in all three games. Drop beans. Match beans. Combo beans. Crush your opponent. It's one of the best puzzlers on the Virtual Console, but if you're any sort of fan of the genre, odds are that you already own it in some form.
So what does Puyo Puyo 2 have to offer over Kirby and Dr. Robotnik? Well, lots of untranslated Japanese text, for one thing. Gameplay is slightly more polished here, too, and there's a few options and features that the other two games lack. If I had to pick one Puyo Puyo game to buy on the Virtual Console, it would be this one. It's got just enough bizarre charm and wackiness in it to push it past its somewhat generic-looking clones.

None of this matters, though, because you already own this game. It may be a little better than the other Puyo Puyos already on the Virtual Console, but it doesn't offer anywhere near nine dollars of improvement. If you've already got Kirby or Dr. Robotnik, you can rest easy knowing that you're not missing anything here.

Yeah well I DON'T have Kirby's Avalanche or Kirby's Avalanche, so maybe I might consider picking this one up... what do you think of THAT
But do you have Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine??
There's no such thing.
