The Most Collectible SNES Games

Ahh, how I love articles like this. Racketboy, perennial guide to all things retro, has posted up a piece on the most "rare and valuable" (read: collectible) SNES games. A breakdown of the rarity, price, and overall popularity of each of the major titles follows. Weirdly, a lot of the absolute rarest games aren't very valuable at all, probably because they aren't much fun. Good to know at least some people are buying these things to play them...

This does a lot to explain the weird pricing I was running into when I broke down the list of Virtual Console prices versus collector prices. A lot of games appeared to be unusually valuable for no particular reason other than being recognizable, popular games. Apparently the way the SNES collector market is driven is that, generally, more popular games are more valuable than games with little marquee value, regardless of rarity. Rarity only seems to kick in relative to games that are popular, or at least have a certain cult status ala Fire Emblem or Earthbound.

Aero Fighters! I bought a copy of that at Gamestop a couple years back for $6.99 (they had three SNES games, and the other two were Killer Instinct), and after buying its original box and poster off of ebay for about $40, I sold the whole package for almost $200. Good times.

Looks like I've got anywhere between $310 - $883 worth of games sitting in my box in the living room. I really should play those more.
