I've always been fascinated by stuff like this. NES Productions sells you cartridge reproductions of never-sold games that have gotten into the wild in ROM format, whether your Earthbound Zeroes or your fan-made Tecmo Super Bowl 2007s. You can play these carts on unmodified NES units to get a more authentic experience.
Jason Cipriano at MTV Multiplayer sat down to talk with Leon Kiriluk, owner of NES Productions, about making the cartridge reproductions, his profits (or lack thereof), and what drives a man to leave work and then manufacture game carts for a hobby.
Multiplayer: Do you share any of the profits with the creators of those homebrew games?
Kiriliuk: What profits? :)
After the cost of shipping, printing, memory chips, and material to put the game together, very little is left. Ive estimated that I make less than minimum wage making these games.
So why do I make them? Because its my hobby! Some people like to collect baseball cards, other like to collect stamps, I love to collect NES games and make them.
