How to Survive with DS Homebrew

Jan. 24 7:14 AM by Alicia Ashby

Usually I love the Escapists's "personal" approach to writing about games, but I wish this piece had been more to the point. Pat Miller's The Life Nomadic with the DS is a guide to survival for a low-budget technophile forced to use his or her DS as a PDA substitute. The "surviving in Japan" stuff tends to get the lion's share of the description, though...

Probably the coolest application to hit the DS, though, is SvSIP, which lets you make voice over IP phone calls - that's right, phone calls, though you need to bring your own provider - with the DS' built-in microphone. While it's not quite a replacement for a cell phone, it'll do in a pinch, and besides, the DS-homeless can't be picky. On the plus side, having an extended conversation with your DS probably looks about as bizarre as yelling "OBJECTION!" at it, so you won't stand out too badly.

If you, like me, are a cold-hearted bastard who just wants a list of the interesting links embedded into the piece, then check behind the cut.

  • DS Organize: replicates most of your basic PDA functions with text editor, calculator, organize, and basic IRC and web browsing.
  • DSWifi: helps you find and organize lists of open access points.
  • NDSMail: Handles e-mail and RSS.
  • DSAim: Check AIM on your Nintendo DS.
  • Beup: Check MSN on your NIntendo DS.
  • DSLiveWeather: Check the weather with your DS.
  • Treasures of Gaia: Check out Google Maps informatiion with your DS.
