BlogCritics Wish for a Better Wii

It's kind of funny. Despite how hot the Nintendo Wii is with the mainstream, it's drawn really mixed review from the "core" (or traditional) gaming market. Ken Edwards at BlogCritics outlines what he wishes Nintendo would improve about the Wii in 2008.

Out of all three "next-gen" consoles, the Wii is a major disappointment. Many core gamers, and even some casual gamers, are finding the platform collects a lot of dust because the time between AAA software is staggering. This is not necessarily Nintendo's fault, as Nintendo publishes (which is the norm for their consoles) the bulk of the AAA titles. Third parties need to step up to the plate and prove to me that they are in this for the long haul, and not just cashing in on a clunky, one trick pony.

I can't say I'd mind seeing more AAA third-party titles, but I can say that all AAA-releases on Nintendo hardware being from Nintendo isn't necessarily the norm. It was the case with the GameCube for most of its lifespan, and the GameCube is arguably the black sheep of the Nintendo hardware family.

Black sheep? Maybe of the *disc-based* Nintendo Hardware... man I went from obsessively collecting 120 stars on Mario 64 twice to giving up on the N64 entirely in less than 2 years, whereas some of my favorite Gamecube games came out after the system had been around for that long. AAA first-party titles be damned, I think the N64 was more of a black sheep than anything.

Still, it's all relative, but at least we can agree that the Virtual Boy was the retarded cousin that no-one really talks about in the Nintendo family.
