More Details About DSi NA Launch, Features Emerge

A lot of new information about the DSi has shown up today. Embedded above is an interview with Reggie Fils-Aime by X-Play's Dan Hsu where Fils-Aime describes why the NA launch of the DSi is going to be delayed. Fils-Aime states that demand for the DS Lite model throughout the Americas right now is so strong that there is no need to launch the DSi in this territory until the next fiscal year, which translates into "after April 2009".

When it comes to DSi features, it has been confirmed that the DSi actually comes with two .3 megapixel cameras, one on the system's shell that points out and one that points upward at the player's face during play. The music playback feature will only support AAC format, not MP3 as originally rumored. Both features are supported by fairly robust built-in editing software in the DSi.

Sorry to nitpick, but AAC's not a proprietary Apple format - it's a standard format in the same sense as MP3, in that anyone can implement it if they pay a licensing fee. I'm assuming the licensing fee must lower than it is for MP3.

Either that or Nintendo wants to sell music for the DSi? Apple uses AAC because they only have to pay a license for players, and don't have to pay anything for streaming or distributing tracks encoded in AAC; MP3 requires licensing fees just for distributing encoded content.

I am educated! I'll amend the main article accordingly.

I have no idea why Nintendo's gadgets aren't supporting MP3 lately, but they aren't. They actively removed MP3 support from the Wii Photo Channel around this time last year, replacing it with AAC.
